So, it does excite me when I see a poem that is clear in its intentionality with the form -in other words, the poem shows that the author has thought about “how does this container hold or shape my story”? The poem can be in a “standard” form, let’s say, in couplets, or in a more experimental form with refreshing visual elements, but the poet should be thoughtful about how the story is told in addition to what it says. Today, we’re speaking with Emily Jungmin Yoon, poetry editor for The Margins, the digital journal of the Asian American Writers’ Workshop.įrom a craft standpoint, what causes you to accept a poem?Įmily Jungmin Yoon: I think that every poem is a story, whether it is written as a narrative or not. In that light, we’ve been asking some great editors from around the literary community for their frank thoughts on how poems get evaluated from within their slush pile of submissions, and what poets can do to better their chances. The community lifts itself up together or not at all. In every part Clarke takes us to different parts of the galaxy, still not deviating from his main theme of the great, yet dangerous consequences of the increasing human presence outside the Earth. In fact, the change of scenery contributes to the immerse power of the tetralogy. There are also other minor difference but contrary to expectations they do not disappoint the reader. Thus, Clarke chose to focus on Jupiter, instead of Saturn, as in the first part. Observations and conclusions from viewing space objects, and especially Jupiter, added more to the human understanding about the universe. Between the publishing of the two novels, technology increased at amazing rates. In this novel, however, the monolith is now floating around Jupiter. How great a statement and how perfectly it fits into the whole grand concept of Clarke’s masterpiece.Ģ010 Odyssey Two obviously takes place 9 years after the tragic destiny of Discovery, the space ship sent to examine Saturn, which found the same strange monolith structure, as the one on the Moon. They indeed feature common characters, but not necessarily in the same universe. As the author himself points out, the four parts of Space Odyssey MUST be regarded as separate pieces of literature. When writing a science-fiction novel of the calibre of Arthur Clarke’s Space Odyssey it is totally understandable, if not absolutely expectable, that the sequel would not follow exactly the events that preceded it. Paulsen recalls personal experiences that he incorporated into Hatchet (1987) and its three sequels, from savage attacks by moose and mosquitoes to watching helplessly as a heart-attack victim dies. This edition follows the highly regarded translation by John Ormsby along with his complete original introduction. A work that frequently appears on lists in the highest echelon of published fiction, "e Don Quixote"e is a novel that has deeply influenced a host of notable writers and readers for hundreds of years. While initially farcical, the novel slowly reveals a more philosophical thread exploring the theme of deception, all the while creating emotional and mental reversals in the two main figures that take them from tilting at windmills to fully comprehending reality. This first of modern novels was written in the experimental episodic form, allowing Don Quixote and his 'squire' Sancho Panza to go on quests that just as often as not land them in trouble or earn them the incredulity of those fully engaged in reality. What begins as the story of a middle-aged country gentleman absorbed with novels of chivalry deliberately evolves into a tale of purely imaginative knight-errantry in this highly influential work of the Spanish Golden Age. |
